Mitchell Nelson joined the HSUS in late 2024 following a tenure as Mid-Michigan Regional Director for U.S. Senator Gary Peters. He previously worked in the Michigan House of Representatives and the Michigan Senate, and also as a public defender. Nelson has a bachelor’s in Literature: Creative Writing from UC Santa Cruz and a JD from Southwestern Law School. He serves on the Boards of Directors for Citizens for Prison Reform and the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness. He lives in Grand Rapids with his wife, daughter and two rescue dogs, a pit bull and a chihuahua.
